Question: What is the ruling if a person reads beyond At tahiyyat, by reading a portion of Durood Ebrahim in the first Qa`ada(sitting) of a four Rakaat Fardh Salaah?
Answer: If a person reads beyond At tahiyyat, in the first Qa`ada of a four Rakaat Fardh, Wajib or Sunnah Muakkadah Salaah, by reading Durood Ebrahim up until وعلى اّل محمد he will have to make Sajdah Sahw. However, if he stops before that - there will be no Sajdah Sahw.
As for the Sunnah Ghair Muakkadah and Nafl salah, it will be permissible to read durood after the At tahiyyat of the first Qa`ada as well. (Shaami v.2 pg.81)
The method for making Sajdah Sahw as follows: In the last Qa’ada after reading At Tahiyyat, make one Salaam to the right and then make two Sajdahs. After performing the two Sajdahs return to the sitting position and re-read At tahiyyat, read Durood Ebrahim, and the Duas read in the last Qa’ada. Thereafter, perform the Salaam to both the right and left side as one does to exit the Salaah.
P.S. The above ruling is according to the Hanfi Madhab. If you are a follower of any other Madhab, please consult your local scholar.
