Question: I have a problem keeping my Wudhu due to flatulence – does the Shariah grant any concession to me?

Answer: Due to flatulence, if a person’s Wudhu continues to break for an entire Salaah time, so much so that he/she does not find an opportunity to make Wudhu and perform Salaah without passing gas - then this person will be regarded as a Ma’zoor. After that, if during every Salaah time, the flatulence reoccurs, he/she will remain a Ma'zoor. But if the flatulence does not come about even once from one Salaah time to the next, then he will no more be regarded as a Ma'zoor.

The laws that apply to such a person is that he/she will have to make a fresh Wudhu for every Fardh Salaah time. Once he/she has made wudhu for a Fardh Salaah time, it will be permissible for him/her to read that particular Fardh Salaah, Nafl Salaah, Waajib Salaah and perform other ibaadaat (which require wudhu) such as touching the Qur’aan to make tilaawat etc. with that Wudhu.  Once the Salaah time expires, his/her wudhu will break automatically.

Notwithstanding the above, if his/her wudhu breaks due to some other factor other than flatulence, then it will be necessary for him/her to refresh his wudhu.

P.S. The laws of a Ma’zoor are intricate therefore it is best to discuss with your local scholar.
