Question: What is Hadath al-Akbar and Hadath al Ashrat?
Answer: Hadath al-Akbar (The major impurity) is when washing the whole body becomes obligatory. In this state one is not allowed to read Salaah, recite Quraan, enter a Masjid, etc. The washing of the entire body is called Ghusl. After Ghusl, Hadath al-Akbar will be removed.
Hadath -al Asghar(The minor impurity) is the washing and wiping of certain limbs. This washing is called Wudhu. Wudhu is required for Salaah, to touch the Quraan, to make Tawaaf, etc.
