Question: What is the status of a male wearing a Topi (Islamic headgear)?

Answer: It was the habit of the Messenger Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam to either wear a Topi only or a Topi with a Turban. Hence, wearing a Topi or a Topi & Turban is Sunnah. Love of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam demands that we strive to adopt every Sunnah. 

عن  ابن عمر  رضى الله  عنه  قال ؛ كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يلبس قلنسوة بيضاء ( مجمع الزوائد ٥/١٤٩)

عن ابن عباس رضى الله عنهما ان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يلبس القلانس تحت العمامة (مرقاة المفاتيح ١/١٣٥
