Question: Is Umrah compulsory and when should it be performed?

Answer: According to Imam Abu Hanifa RA. And Imam Maalik RA. Umrah is Sunnah, whereas it is wajib according to Imam Shafi'ee RA. and Imam Ahmed RA.

Apart from five days (when it is makrooh - from the 9th to 13th of Dhul-Hijjah) Umrah may be performed at any time during the year. (Fadhaa’il-e- Hajj Page 125)
