Question:What are the laws pertaining to voluntary Tawaaf?

Answer:Tawaaf means circumambulating around the Ka'bah seven times, starting and ending off at the Black Stone, moving in an anti-clockwise direction.

There are several prerequisites and requirments for Tawaaf:

1.Purification: A person who intends to do Tawaaf must make sure that he/she removes any impurity from himself/herself and the garments they are wearing. It is necessary perform Wudhu.

2.Covering the Awarah: A man must cover himself from the waistline down to below his knees. A woman is required to cover her entire body with the exception of her face and hands.

3. Intention: It is necessary to make an intention for all acts of worship. Before commencing Tawaaf one should make the intention; "I intend to perform Nafl Tawaaf for the sake of Allah."

4. Istilam: The Tawaaf will commence and terminate with Istilam. The method is as follows:

One should place the palms of both the hands upon the Hajar al- Aswad. While reciting بسم الله الله أكبر ,place one’s mouth between both the palms and kiss the Hajar al- Aswad.

If this is not possible, then one should face the Hajar al- Aswad and raise both the hands in line with the shoulders and face the palms of both the hands in the direction of the  Hajar al- Aswad, say the Takbeer and thereafter kiss both the hands.

5 During Tawaaf, it is not permissible to face or turn your back to the Ka'bah, except when you are kissing or pointing at the the Hajar Aswad.

6.Salaah: It is Wajib (necessary) to perform two Rakaats of Salaah after Tawaaf. Peferably, this should be offered close to the Maqam Ibrahim.

If it is the Makrooh times of Salaah, for example sunrise, midday and sunset, then the two Rakaats should be delayed until after the Makrooh times.
