Question: What is the status and  reward for fasting on Aashura?

Answer: It is Sunnah to fast on the day of Ashura (10th of Muharram). Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said:

صِيَامُ يَوْمِ عَاشُورَاءَ، إِنِّي أَحْتَسِبُ عَلَى اللهِ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ السَّنَةَ الَّتِي قَبْلَهُ (ترمذي)

"Fast the Day of Ashura, for indeed I anticipate that Allah will forgive (the sins of) the year before it.”

Imam Ahmad narrates on the authority of Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbaas (Radhiallaahu Anhu) that Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Alaihi  Wasallam) mentioned; ‘Fast on Aashura, but oppose the Jews in it. Hence, fast either a day before it or after it.’

Hence, one should fast either the 9th and 10th of Muharram or the 10th and 11th of Muharram.

 And Allah Knows Best
